Most of the time, I roll out of bed, throw on a pair of jeans, stick on some sunscreen, and leave the house. Except for a couple of choice spots, Kigali is a pretty casual city. However, on those special occasions where my friends and I want more than a cold Skol and plastic chairs, plentiful options are out there. Break out some date night attire, and read on for the best places in Kigali to check out for a fancy drink.
Ah, Brachetto. In addition to offering delicious Italian food, Brachetto is home to Kigali’s best wine cellar. Head here for a wine night with some fellow connoisseurs, and sip and swirl your way through their fabulous wine list.
The Spanish tapas at Casa Keza are still the talk of town, and the aubergine fries will forever have a place on my favorite meals in Kigali list. However, in addition to wonderful food, Casa Keza is also home to Kigali’s best sangria (Rwf 14,000 for a one liter jug). Go hang out in their expansive garden, and get numerous orders of the aubergines and sangria.
Though I wouldn’t necessarily call this hopping restaurant and bar a fancy spot to get a drink, this is undoubtedly one of Kigali’s most popular going out spots. Definitely head to Choma’D for a drink or two, and bring a group to sprawl out at their long and communal wooden picnic tables. Plus, their daily cocktail specials are great value.
Hotel des Mille Collines
I usually spend most of my time at the Mille Collines hanging by the pool and enjoying the breakfast spread, but, for a nice evening, Le Panorama is beautiful. Located on the top floor of the hotel with some of the city’s best views, head here for a special (albeit expensive) night out. Try and make it in time for sunset.
Trust me – the Inzora Friday night cocktail and snack board is such a delight. Pretty reasonably priced, and with one of Kigali’s best views, this place makes it onto the list without a question. However, be aware that these fancy and delightful beverages are only available on Friday evenings.
So what do you think, Kigali? Where do you like to go for a fancy drink or night out on the town – did we miss any of your favorites? Let us know in the comment section!
Yes, I know – listing a whole hotel is sort of cheating. However, The Marriott as a whole, with its assortment of options, is a great place for a fancy drink out on the town. Enjoy the classy Marriott vibe, and dole out 38,000 RWF for an all you can eat and drink (of wine and champagne that is) Saturday or Sunday brunch at the Soko Restaurant. Or, hit the town on Thursday for ladies night at the in-house Iriba Bar.
The Poivre Noir hamburger is known around town as one of the city’s best, and their entree selections are pretty fantastic as well. However, feel free skip the food (though its some of the best in town, so don’t do it!) and head straight to their cocktail and wine list. Though cocktails are pretty pricey at Rwf 7,000, they’re really good and unique. The Poivre Noir wine list is also excellently paired with their food options, and there are several reasonably priced bottles on the menu.
Though Repub Lounge is well known for its delicious food offerings, their carafe of wine (Rwf 10,000) and Wednesday night happy hour are a great deal. Come for the brochettes, but stay for the drinks. And, their lovely city view is just an added bonus.
The Ubumwe Grande has all you could want in a night or day out- its central location, spectacular view, and classy setting is a unique combination in Kigali, and easily one of my favorite spots to hang out at. Come by earlier in the day to lounge pool side and try some snacks, and definitely make sure to be there for sunset.
