White Horse

White Horse

Hello Food KigaliAfter changing owners a couple of times, what is now called White Horse (previously known as Sun and Moon) seems to be ready to leave the aimlessly wandering days behind, and start working on improving their food and service. I recently met the owner, an energetic man who was eager to get suggestions from his customers. The latest addition to White Horse’s offers is free wireless Internet, and hopefully this is one in many improvements to this Italian restaurant and hangout.

The menu might have been re-printed under its new name, but the dishes are still mostly the same as the old Sun and Moon, the sibling restaurant to Sol e Luna in Kisiment. The pizzas are reasonable and tasty (thin crust), and the pasta dishes are large and pretty decent as well. I would stay clear of the sandwiches unless you’re in the mood for a lot of white bread, and the salads are somewhat skimpy for what you pay for them.

Margerita Pizza with Pineapple

So unless you’re craving a good Italian pizza— which they do indeed have— the best option might be to skip dinner and fill up on beer instead. Their selection of imported beer is still in its infancy, but on good days they have a small collection of European and American beer brands behind the bar.

For lunch, they offer a decent— albeit pricy (4500 RWF)— buffet with an ‘Eggplant Parm’ to die for, as well as fish and meat and a small salad bar.

White Horse still has room for improvement when it comes to attentiveness and friendliness. On occasion, I have been waiting quite some time to be served, even on days when the restaurant is nearly empty. Once you get your order in, though, the wait is generally not too long. For large groups, White Horse is a good place to go, as they very willing to accommodate you, both with preordering food and prepare a decent sized table.

Mediterranian Salad

Location-wise White Horse doesn’t have much competition. There really aren’t many alternatives for eating in town – especially when you’ve had enough of Bourbon – and White Horse is a good option, especially now that they have wifi. In terms of atmosphere, however, I really don’t feel the restaurant has found its own identity yet. The outdoor deck lacks personality, and the inside booths are mostly empty, as is the could-be dance floor. Evidently it used to be crowded here during weekends, and I would like to see a stronger effort to attract young people on Friday and Saturday nights – Kigali desperately needs it!

All in all White Horse is a decent place to get a good and reasonable pizza. Close to town and thus good for lunch, but with a ways to go in terms of atmosphere and a more original menu. Potentially a fun weekend hangout…
