This place has closed down and there is not a Brioche cafe in this great location.

Quickuku is Kigali’s answer to fast food fried chicken. Perched on the hill close to Gacuriro overlooking Nyamirambo, it’s certainly one of the nicer views of any fast food joint I’ve been in.

The menu is pretty small and given you really only have a choice between chicken or sausage, it shouldn’t take too long to decide what to eat. You can get meals of quarter and half chickens or, if you’re feeling a bit more peckish (pun very much intended) then go for the whole bird. I don’t really get the sausage thing. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a restaurant with either chicken or sausage as the meat of choice but there it is. They also come in sandwich form.

The service was decent – friendly and the food came out within 15 minutes. I ordered a quarter chicken combo meal (Rwf 3,800) which comes with chips (or add wedges for Rwf 200 extra) and a salad. My plate was loaded up with chips but the salad was somehow forgotten. I’m not sure how a meal can have only three parts to it and one can be forgotten, but there it is. A sad looking little salad came out shortly after, once I reminded them. It was small and mostly lettuce but the dressing was tasty.

Quarter Chicken Combo (Rwf 3,800)The chicken was nice and moist and there was no sign of the chewiness you’ll find in chicken at local places. The chips were ok… nothing special, though. All up it’s a fast food meal… you’re there for food on the run, not for a culinary experience. The meal was decent but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there again. Prices aren’t really that cheap, either. At Rwf 3,800 the combo was a bit more than I was expecting.

One advantage to Quickuku is that you can enjoy a beer (big Primus Rwf 1,000, Mutzig Rwf 1,500) or a glass of wine (Rwf 2,000) on their patio overlooking the city (although the banner sort of obstructs the view…) If you happen to be in this part of town and want a quick, filling meal on a patio with a nice view, then give it a try but if you want fast food that keeps you coming back for more I’d recommend trying Mr. Chips.

About Kirsty

A Canadian who left in 2001 to wander around the world in search of sun, beautiful views and goat brochettes. Found Kigali in July 2010 and it seems like the perfect fit. I expect to be here until I get kicked out for defiantly walking on the grass while wearing flip flops.
