Chez Lando

Chez Lando

I like Chez Lando. It’s a bit far away from where I live so I rarely hang out here, but when I do I always leave wondering why I don’t make more of an effort to get out here. True, it’s a bit expensive, but the food is pretty good and it’s got a nice atmosphere.

The menu is pretty typical of what you’ll find at restaurants in Kigali. It has the usual soups, salads, samosas, fries and brochettes. A mixed salad will cost Rwf 2,500, veggie soup is the same price and thee samosas costs Rwf 1,500 for three. There’s a pretty good selection of fish with brochettes, fish fingers, filets and whole fish an option. You can choose between tilapia and Nile perch. You can get rabbit here too which is an interesting choice that I haven’t seen in too many places here. Goat brochettes with a couple of sides costs Rwf 4,500 which is pretty pricey.

They have a daily three course meal on offer for Rwf 7,000 where you can choose soup or a salad as a starter and either ice cream, fruit or tea or coffee as a dessert. The mains when I was there on a Wednesday were chicken Kiev, a beef stir fry type thing, and pasta and vegetables with cheese. I’m not sure if the choices change daily.

Tilapia Fillet - Rwf 4,500I ordered the tilapia fish filet with green peppercorn sauce. You have a choice of sides including the usuals but I wanted mashed potatoes which was no problem after a few issues trying to communicate my request. They were mash potato-esque but seemed as though they’d been heated under the grill for awhile so they had a yummy, golden-brown crust over the top. Tasty.

A soda at Chez Lando costs Rwf 600, a large Mutzig is Rwf 1,500 and a large Primus Rwf 1,300 which is pretty pricey. A small bottle of Warage is Rwf 3,000 and a shot of vodka Rwf 2,500. They have a few cocktails on offer for Rwf 4,000 – 5,000. A glass of box wine is Rwf 2,500.

I really love the setting at Chez Lando. It’s got an open-air courtyard with a bunch of nooks around the outside, although they’re almost always full each time I come. There’s a pool table and sports on a few televisions and it’s just a nice, relaxed place to hang out and to get a good meal.

I'm a Canadian who left in 2001 to wander around in search of sun, beautiful views, and goat brochettes. I found Kigali in July 2010 and it seems like the perfect fit so I stuck around and made this website. I also like to make fun maps and I spend a good chunk of my time in Portugal building things.
