Bourbon Coffee (UTC)

Bourbon Cafe

Hello Food Kigali

Muzungus flock to the free wifi, coffee and couches of Bourbon cafe like a moth to a flame. I too find myself spending an inappropriate amount of time here but continue to wonder why I keep coming back.

I hate the menu here. The food is average and the choice isn’t really all that inspiring. Their chicken noodle soup is nasty and their spaghetti bolognaise is way too much spaghetti and way too little sauce. Watch out for the sandwiches that have cheese because sometimes the cheese tastes like the way feet smell. I’m looking at you, pesto chicken sandwich. The salads are pretty good but make sure you specify the type of dressing you want or it could come covered in whichever dressing they feel like putting on that day.

Things look up a little bit on the dessert and drinks side of the operation. Bourbon’s ice cream is one of their finest offerings and their chocolate milkshake and iced mocha drinks are delicious. The cakes are mostly dry (I’m not even sure how it’s possible to make cheesecake so dry) although the zucchini and banana breads are tasty if you get them warmed up.

Though Bourbon food is average at best, expect to pay a for it – this place is pricey! They even have one icey frozen drink for Rwf 4,500… that’s about $7 people! It’s the closest thing to Starbucks Rwanda has and they have somehow managed to have prices even more insane than them.

Creative SandwichAs with most places in Kigali it can be hard to get your server’s attention as they have an uncanny knack of always looking in the opposite direction of the customers they’re looking after. Once you do get their attention, though, they’re pretty nice and things tend to go relatively smoothly by Kigali standards.

One of the best things about Bourbon is that you’re likely to bump into plenty of people you know, especially if you’ve been in town for awhile. That might be a good thing or, if you’re milking the free wifi and trying to get work done, it might not be so good. The couches inside are comfy and the patio is a nice place to while away the hours. It really does have a cozy atmosphere but if the place is busy make sure you keep ordering or you could be asked to leave.

Bourbon is popular with expats and locals alike who have the money to spend on overpriced food and drinks. Because of its central location in the UTC and popularity as a meeting place, you will inevitably find yourself here at some point whether you want to or not.

About Kirsty

A Canadian who left in 2001 to wander around the world in search of sun, beautiful views and goat brochettes. Found Kigali in July 2010 and it seems like the perfect fit. I expect to be here until I get kicked out for defiantly walking on the grass while wearing flip flops.
