Home Saint Jean (Kibuye)

Home Saint Jean, Kibuye

This guesthouse is perched high above Lake Kivu with fantastic views. It’s located just behind a huge church a short 10 to 15 minute walk from where the Capital Express bus drops you off. To get there leave the bus stop walking slightly to the right until you get to a roundabout. Continue to the other side of the roundabout and keep walking. After about 10 minutes you’ll see a large, beautiful church with a memorial in front of it. Walk down the path to the right of the church for a few minutes and you’ll be there.

The ViewThe building is pretty striking, set on a hill looking down into the lake below. The staff were very welcoming and their English was fine although things will be easier if you can speak in French. We were looking for a twin room with a a toilet and shower inside but all they had left were double rooms with relatively small beds. Twin and double rooms with bathrooms inside are either Rwf 16,000 or 20,000 (for the whole room, not per person) depending on whether there’s a bathroom inside or now. Home Saint Jean has a variety of room ranging in price from only Rwf 7,000 for a bed in a dorm room to Rwf 25,000 for a single room with a bathroom all the way up to an apartment with six beds total for Rwf 70,000 (with breakfast for two guests included).

The location is great not far from the town but also close to the lake. The walk down to Lake Kivu is a steep one but it only takes a few minutes. Their property at the bottom of the hill is pretty steep but there are a couple of flat-ish places to sprawl out in the sun. There are also several benches that you could lie down on although they didn’t look like the most comfortable spots. There’s access to the lake but you’ll have to scramble down the hill a bit and then crawl on some rocks before you can get into the water.

Double Room with Bathroom - Rwf 10,000The food here was surprisingly good. I’m not sure why I was so surprised… I guess I just figured that a cheap place like this would have pretty average food. The spaghetti bolognaise is gigantic (and really meaty) and the fish brochettes with chips and a small cabbage, carrot and tomato salad was affordable very tasty… although it was less like brochettes and more like lightly battered fish nuggets.

The rooms come equipped with a mosquito net and were comfortable enough, although my light didn’t work and my pillow was amazingly lumpy. But the beds are comfortable enough. I feel like they could use a few reclining or comfortable chairs in the deck area as the plastic chairs just don’t really cut it if you’re looking to really relax. But I guess it’s also a restaurant area and they probably don’t want borderline naked people sunning themselves right there, especially in a place that has bibles and crucifixes all over the place. I guess the grass at the bottom of the hill will have to do if you want to lie down.

I really liked this place. Friendly staff, very good value for money both with the food and rooms, clean, and perfectly placed above Lake Kivu and close to the town. Check it out next time you need a break from Kigali.

About Kirsty

A Canadian who left in 2001 to wander around the world in search of sun, beautiful views and goat brochettes. Found Kigali in July 2010 and it seems like the perfect fit. I expect to be here until I get kicked out for defiantly walking on the grass while wearing flip flops.
