Uburanga Arts Studio

Uburanga Arts Studio

Contemporary art is on the rise in Rwanda thanks to studios like Uburanga Arts. Started in March 2012 by Jean Bosco Bakunzi, the studio is home to 11 artists who produce colourful paintings and sculptures and who are pushing Rwanda’s art scene forward. Unfortunately art doesn’t get the attention and support it deserves and Jean Bosco is working hard to develop contemporary art as an investment in Rwanda’s cultural future.

Uburanga is a Kinyarwanda word that means ‘beautiful’ and it’s a perfect name to describe both the work that this art studio produces and the setting they do it in. The studio is located in Kimuhurura, down the road just past Lemigo Hotel. It’s a beautiful setting with a large garden decorated with murals and sculptures. It’s a creative space that’s home to artists who are producing some of Rwanda’s finest contemporary art. The artists are friendly and welcoming and are happy for you to hang out in their garden and chat or watch them at work.

You can see their art on display in their gallery and pick up a painting or two if you like what you see. Actually, if you’ve flown out of Kigali airport, you’ve probably already seen some of their smaller paintings on display upstairs. They do exhibitions at Heaven Restaurant from time to time in case you prefer your art with a meal. Some of the artists have held exhibitions in various places around the world and there’s a show coming up in Montreal on June 28th, 2012 which will feature three of the studio’s painters. Get in touch with them if you’d like more details.

They’re working on planning an art fair in October which will include a group exhibition, live painting and traditional dancing. The studio is also involved in offering workshops to children that include t-shirt design and making greeting cards. A short documentary has even been made about one of their painters, Augustin: So Far, So Good.

There are lots of really cool things happening at the Uburanga Studio so stop in and say hello!

About Kirsty

A Canadian who left in 2001 to wander around the world in search of sun, beautiful views and goat brochettes. Found Kigali in July 2010 and it seems like the perfect fit. I expect to be here until I get kicked out for defiantly walking on the grass while wearing flip flops.
